Dia De Los Muertos and New Exhibit at Forest Lawn Glendale

Dia De Los Muertos (AKA Day of the Dead) has long been a traditional Mexican holiday paying tribute to those that we have lost.  Whether you remember your loved ones who have left before you, or celebrate the lives tragically lost during the recent Mexico earthquake (as New York beautifully did), Day of the Dead is, not surprisingly, a popular tradition here in Los Angeles.

Thus, it only seems fitting that Forest Lawn of Glendale held an inaugural celebration this past weekend in an invite only event as they make way to open this celebration up to all in 2018. The family friendly event featured one mega alter, as well as fifteen gorgeous, small alters to honor the spirits. The afternoon fun also featured local artists and vendors, arts and crafts projects and, of course, favorite foods like tamales and tacos.

I was thrilled to attend the media preview for this celebration, as well as be one of the first to see their newest photography exhibit, Noche de Animas (Night of Souls). In partnership with the Consulate General of Mexico, the Government of the State of Michoacán, Mexico, the Consulate General of Guatemala, and El Canal Cultural de México (Channel 22 Mexico), this is a brilliant cultural exchange between Los Angeles and Mexico City.

Several notable representatives, including Governor of Michoacan, Silvano Aureoles Conejo and Forest Lawn Museum Director, Ana Pescador, were among those at the press conference.

Located in the Hall of the Crucifixion-Resurrection, this exhibit features the works of photographer, Ivan Holguin. Also on hand during the afternoon, Holguin’s work is visually stunning pieces, mostly candid, that depict the lives of locals throughout Mexico in a rich, vibrant composition style.

While Night of Souls exhibit was brought with Day of the Dead in mind, the exhibit will remain up and available for viewing (and free) through December 3rd. As we await October 2018 for Forest Lawn’s first Dia de las Muertos celebration for all to attend and enjoy, you can visit their colorful and fun displays and alters this year, through November 2nd.
