A Dog-Friendly Stay in Camarillo
Who knew Camarillo was such a dog-friendly haven? Since we live in Ventura County, I’m never far from the city. After our fun evening with Imaginarium Atlantis, I knew I wanted to learn more about Camarillo. Fast forward, and we just wrapped up a “dog-gone” (I couldn’t resist) great time with our dogs, Hammy and Nova, in tow.
Although we love to go out with the dogs, they can be a handful. Add in the rest of our family, and it’s a lot. When the opportunity arose to stay overnight in Camarillo and discover their dog-friendly ways, we were in. Between numerous dog parks and dog-friendly restaurants, Camarillo is an excellent destination when Fido joins. Visitors are also just minutes away from beaches, hiking, and dozens of outdoor excursions, including the Channel Islands.
Dog Friendly Hospitality at Camarillo’s Hampton Inn
The dogs loved our stay at the Hampton Inn and Suites. Just off Highway 101, it’s easy to guess that the Hampton Inn is owned by Hilton. The price range is ideal for families looking for a few nights away. Our studio suite featured a California King bed, pull-out sofa bed, microwave, fridge, and we overlooked the pool. The kitchenette came in handy as we acquired leftovers and everyone slept soundly.
A hot breakfast is included with your stay and features an ample variety. While we were eager to enjoy the restaurants around town, it was helpful for a quick bite. They’re prepared for dogs with plenty of grassy areas and a dog station with bags. Even though we’re local, Camarillo’s Hampton Inn is ideal for those needing lodging in or near Camarillo. Especially if dogs will be with them. The staff was very welcoming and clearly loves dogs.
Dining with Dogs in Camarillo
We found some delicious restaurants in Camarillo that are both dog and gluten-free-friendly. The best part is that we live close enough to easily return. Our Saturday lunch found us at Rice by Mama. Confession: I’m no stranger to Rice by Mama. Their authentic Thai dishes are a favorite in Ventura County, and I’ve enjoyed a few meals at their Ventura location. Camarillo is equally mouth-watering, and I love that the menu clearly lists gluten-free options. Our server was quick to bring the dogs a water bowl, and their patio is easily accessible for pooches.
For breakfast and lunch, check out Braxton’s Kitchen or the Hidden Cafe. I’d driven by Braxton’s countless times and always thought, I need to check that spot out. Their logo features Braxton himself, a shepherd dog, and it’s clear the nook is dog-centric. The menu is similar to diner fare with egg dishes, griddle favorites, and sandwiches. There are also smoothies, coffee, and even a dog section with a dog bowl meal. Hammy and Nova shared the large one, it consists of rice, meat, and some veggies. They licked it clean, which was helpful instead of begging for our food.
Despite being as hidden as its name suggests, the Hidden Cafe draws crowds for good reason. Mike and I thought our breakfast was a highlight of the Camarillo trip. There was a bit of a wait for outdoor seating, but it was worth it, and the dogs were extra cozy. Their vast menu of breakfast items could rival the Cheesecake Factory. Although the plates may seem “basic,” think eggs, breakfast meats, pancakes, all of our orders tasted extremely fresh and homemade. The Hidden Cafe is quintessential Sunday morning dining.

Dinner at Lure Fish House
Just a few minutes from the Hampton Inn, Lure Fish House feels both elegant and laid-back. I was so pleased to find out they were dog-friendly, so we headed over for an early dinner. The interior was busy, as one would expect for a Saturday night. A large bar overlooks the dining room, and the atmosphere is lively. Since we were dining al fresco, I appreciated that it was calmer outside. This was especially helpful with loud kiddos and some hyper pups with us.
As a seafood lover, the menu was instantly inviting. Lure offers a blend of daily catch options in addition to staples. Several plates listed a “GF” mark, and I was pleased to find out they grill their foods in avocado or olive oil. I ended up feeling a bit like Hammy and Nova. I devoured my rockfish entree so much that I could have licked my plate clean. It was that good. As was my Tangerine Dream vodka cocktail.
Stroll Old Town Camarillo
As soon as we hit the Old Town district of town, it was clear how dog-friendly Camarillo is. There’s a fun mix of coffee houses, restaurants, shops, and businesses. Each one was so accommodating to Hammy and Nova. For a caffeine hit or treat, check out Cafe Ficelle. The French-inspired cafe brews up espresso and tea sips as well as crepes and pastries. Mabel especially enjoyed her hot chocolate here.
I felt very at home in American Pie Records and Coffee House. As their name says, this small gem has a great selection of vinyl and a blink and you’ll miss it coffee bar. Mabel pointed out how cool their tables are. Circular tables have records glued to them, and they even spin to give the illusion of a record player!
Since Mike is always ready for Asian cuisine, Lola Betty’s Kitchen caught his eye. As Camarillo keeps proving, Lola Betty’s is another eatery with authentic, “mom and pop” taste. They serve up Filipino rice bowls in a small kitchen space with just an order window and some outdoor tables. Keep them in mind for a delicious grab-and-go in between shopping in Old Town.

Dog-Friendly Parks Throughout Camarillo
We had been to Camarillo Grove Park, but it was the dogs’ first trip. The beautiful space features a playground, hiking trails, education stations, a water cycle table, and a K-9 Campus with two small off-leash dog parks. It’s extremely easy to spend the entire afternoon here, as there’s so much available. We love their easy nature hike with placards along the way to learn about the surrounding habitats. An old house features information on woodpeckers, as they are the culprits for countless holes covering the unit!
As if that’s not enough to keep you busy, Camarillo has three more off-leash dog parks: Springville, Mission, and Freedom.
We’re so happy to know how dog-happy Camarillo is. Whatever the occasion, make sure to bring the four-legged pals along for a Camarillo adventure. Learn more HERE.
